Halloween Fun with Interior Designer, Janna Curtis!!
In different phases of my business, I had to learn how to ask for and hire help. It all started with hiring babysitters (AKA a nanny or daycare provider) to watch my kids while I was on the phone.
Technically, they were old enough to watch themselves – but they didn’t understand why I couldn’t talk to them or take them to a friends. “Mom is working!!” Didn’t make a lot of sense.
I resisted getting childcare for a long time, until my business coach and mentor told me that THIS issue was holding me back. It took a lot of battling through “mommy guilt” and feelings about money – but I did it!
Fast forward a few years, and I’ve learned how to hire and train teams of people! What a journey it has been.
Hiring an Interior Designer in Salt Lake City!
In 2015, John and I bought a new house in West Jordan. It was DEFINITELY a seller’s market, and we would tour houses only to learn they were under contract – as of five minutes ago.
Dang it!!
We closed on our house, and I had big plans and dreams for getting it put together and looking beautiful!
Then Life Happens
As my business has grown, and I’ve gotten serious about my health (woo learning pilates!!), it hasn’t left a lot of downtime to thoughtfully plan and decorate my home.
I know having a thoughtful home is critical to overall wellbeing, but it kept getting shoved down on my to-do list.
Decorating for The Holidays
Along with the decor of my home year round, I really wanted to have a festive home for holidays – especially Christmas. Every December, I found myself being upset that all my decorations weren’t up, or that I had gotten decor out of storage, only to have it sit in boxes in my family room.
UGH!
In 2017, I decided, “This is just dumb. I’m complaining about the same issue, and it’s not getting fixed. I keep doing the same things and expecting different results.”
Which, incidentally, is the DEFINITION of “insanity.”
Hiring Janna Curtis
I met Janna when I needed an esthetician, and one day while getting a treatment, Janna shared that she has an interior design background.
I almost sat straight up in shock (but I didn’t, because she was applying a treatment).
“I NEED A DESIGNER!!” I exclaimed.
Jana showed me some pictures of other spaces she had worked on, and I knew she was the one. I totally respect other people who interview a few interior designers (it’s smart), but when you know – you know!!
Getting the House Ready for Halloween!
This month, we got my home prepped for Halloween (yes, I take 2 month to celebrate Halloween!) and I just love the space we created together.
We picked up some really fun pumpkins and blankets from Home Goods and TJ Maxx, and used the (abundant) Halloween decor we already have.
I’ll be sharing more home redesigns on the blog, so stay tuned!!
Tips to Make Your Space More Welcoming
I didn’t always have the budget to hire an interior designer, so here are some tips:
BASKETS: If your family members leave stuff lying around, have a basket to pick stuff up and put in their room. Or you can hold it hostage, and have them do a chore to get their stuff back! ;)
Candlesticks: Statement candlesticks can add a LOT to a room, and really freshen up the look!
Bright Furniture: I’ve been using white chalk paint from Annie Sloan Chalk Pant to repaint furniture we purchased in the 1990’s. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, right?! White and more bright furniture brings in a lot of light and makes a space beautiful.
